Day 2 - Bogota, Colombia
Today we explore Bogotá and its Candelaria district and its colourful graffitied walls.

First, we make a stop that will literally take your breath away—we’ll take a cable car to the top of Monserrat Mountain, at 3,050m/10,000ft you can see the whole city unfold before you.

After taking the cable car back down we walk through the city center to explore La Candelaria, Colombia’s oldest neighborhood. This historic neighbourhood is also home to a university district, full of cobblestoned streets and centuries-old houses.

No visit would be complete without a stop at the spectacular Museo del Oro (Gold Museum), featuring the world´s biggest collection of pre-Columbian gold and other metals. After working up an appetite we’ll stop for a local lunch before heading back to our hotel.

This evening dinner is optional, and you also have the option to join our night-out excursion to explore the city’s vibrant gay scene including Theatron, a massive gay club with 13 (!) separate dance floors.

Back on land, explore the pretty, cobblestoned streets and alleyways of Guatapé. Learn a bit about its history, reconstruction, its zocalo friezes, or visit some of the shops along the way.

Trip Notes

Colombia Visa
A visa is not typically required for American, Australian, British and Canadian citizens travelling to Colombia for fewer than 90 days. There may be exceptions, and all visas are the responsibility of the traveller.

Culture Shock
Despite Colombia’s chequered past, the country has come into its own and is now on the path to peace. It is an upper-middle-income country with infrastructure, values, customs and standards that may differ from what you’re accustomed to. While the country has come a very long way you should still expect heavy traffic, along with unanticipated inconveniences such as road closures from time-to-time. Please note our transportation may be altered, and/or our itinerary changed, due to such circumstances beyond our control.

Local LGBT Scene
At least in comparison to neighboring Latin American countries, Colombia is generally gay-friendly. Homosexuality was legalized in 1981 and same-sex marriage was enacted in June 2013. Although the country maintains a laissez-faire attitude towards our community, we still recommend avoiding PDA.

Famous Cartagena

Weather
Due to its elevation, Bogota tends to be cool and overcast with temperatures rarely rising above 70°F. However, the rest of our journey will be in Carribean cities and steamy jungles. Expect hot, sunny days with the odd tropical shower.

Required Vaccinations
Based on entry requirements, some travellers may be required to show proof of a yellow fever vaccination. It is sometimes recommended (but not required) to have a yellow fever vaccination before entering Tayrona National Park. To determine if you should take preventative measures to reduce the risk of illness, you should consult your doctor or a travel medical clinic, as we cannot provide vaccination recommendations.

Gay Cartagena

Electricity
In Colombia the power plugs and sockets are of type A and B. The standard voltage is 110 V and the standard frequency is 60 Hz.

Connectivity
We should have reliable Wi-Fi at most of our accommodations. In Tayrona, our hotel only has Wifi in the common area and it will likely be spotty at best—perhaps this is a great time to disconnect!

Travel Insurance
For everybody’s peace of mind, medical travel insurance is required on all Out Adventures tours. At a minimum, your travel insurance must provide cover against personal accident, death, medical expenses, emergency repatriation and personal liability, with a minimum medical coverage of US $200,000.

Caribbean Sea

Domestic Airfare
Flights are purchased for the entire group 90 days prior to departure, or when the trip is full. While we endeavor to book the best flight/s possible, we may have limited options at the time of purchase. If you are booking your trip less than 90 days to departure, there is a chance you be on a different flight than the rest of the group, and you will be notified in such an instance.

Meals
To keep things flexible, not all meals are included in the trip price. Although we typically dine together so that everybody can get a taste of everything, feel free to explore on your own... your guide will always have some restaurant recommendations.

Cartagena Rosario Islands gay trip

Money
The local currency is the Colombian peso. Credit cards are accepted at hotels and upscale restaurants, but not for gratuities. We recommend carrying approximately $400 USD to be used only in the case of an emergency, or if your credit/ATM cards are placed on hold.

Tipping
Gratuities for included meals are covered in the trip price. However, a tip to your Group Leader, housekeeping, and gratuities for optional meals and drinks at included dinners, optional activities, local day/city guides and drivers are not.
Please note: Credit cards are accepted at hotels and upscale restaurants, but we strongly recommend cash for gratuities.

What to bring
Most Out Adventures entail carrying your own luggage on occasion. And while you’ll never schlep far, things can quickly get costlier than a celebrity breakup if you don’t keep your baggage under 20kg/44lb thanks to costly surcharges on domestic flights. You should also bring something smaller for day trips to carry water, your camera, and any souvenirs you find along the way.
