Hanoi, Vietnam gay tour

Southeast Asia Luxury Gay Tour Itinerary

Days 1, and 2 - Hanoi, Vietnam
Welcome to Vietnam. Upon arrival in Hanoi, you'll be met at the airport and transferred to your luxury hotel in the heart of the city.

Hanoi is a fascinating blend of French colonial architecture, peaceful lakes, ancient temples, and energetic street life.

After you check in and get settled into your stay, you will meet with your group and trip leader to kickstart your adventure together with complimentary drinks and dinner. It's your night to relax and get ready for our adventure through Indochina.

The next day, you'll discover the cultural and historical highlights of Vietnam's capital with a local guide. Visit the Temple of Literature, Vietnam's first university dating back to 1070, followed by the unique Single Pillar Pagoda and Tran Quoc Pagoda, the oldest pagoda in Hanoi.

Later, visit Hoan Kiem Lake and Ngoc Son Temple before enjoying a traditional water puppet performance, an art form unique to northern Vietnam.

The day ends with a cyclo ride through Hanoi's Old Quarter, where narrow streets are filled with local shops, cafés, and local life.

Halong Bay, Viietnam gay cruise

Day 3 - Halong Bay Luxury Cruise
In the morning, we depart Hanoi for Halong Bay, one of Southeast Asia's most iconic landscapes and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Upon arrival, we board our luxury cruise and begin sailing through the beautiful emerald waters surrounded by thousands of limestone islands and dramatic rock formations.

Our vessel, the Super Lux Grand Pioneers, feels more like a boutique floating hotel than a traditional boat, with spacious suites, private balconies, a sundeck, elegant dining room, bar, spa, and even a pool on board.

After a delicious lunch on board, the afternoon is ours to enjoy the bay. Kayak through hidden lagoons, swim in calm waters, or simply relax on the sun deck with a cocktail in hand.

In the evening, we dine on board as the sun sets over the bay, followed by a night anchored among the limestone karsts.

Luang Prabang, Laos gay tour

Days 4, 5, 6, and 7 - Luang Prabang, Laos
Today is the perfect time to wake up to watch the sunrise over Halong Bay and, if you wish, join a calming Tai Chi session on the deck. If not, feel free to sleep in and enjoy the morning before brunch is served on board.

In the afternoon we head back to the mainland for our flight, and make our way to Luang Prabang in Laos, where we will spend the next few days.

On Day 5,
our first full day here, we will explore Luang Prabang, one of Southeast Asia’s most beautifully preserved towns. We visit local markets, historic temples, and the former Royal Palace, now the National Museum.

In the afternoon, we travel to Kuang Si Waterfalls, where turquoise pools cascade through the jungle and visit a local Hmong village, where we learn about traditional crafts, textiles, and daily life in rural Laos.

On day 6,
we get the opportunity to begin the day by witnessing the traditional alms-giving ceremony, where monks collect offerings at sunrise, a deeply spiritual and culturally significant ritual in Laos.

Afterward, we board a boat for a scenic cruise along the Mekong River and enjoy a champagne breakfast as the morning light illuminates the surrounding mountains and riverbanks.

Later in the day, we get to participate in a private Lao cooking class, where you'll learn to prepare traditional dishes using local ingredients before enjoying that very meal you've created.

On Day 7, our final day, we continue to cruise along the Mekong River to Pak Ou Caves, a sacred site filled with thousands of Buddha statues placed here by pilgrims over centuries.

We make stops at local riverside villages known for traditional crafts and rice wine production before disembarking and making our flight to Siem Reap, Cambodia, the gateway to Angkor.

Angkor Wat, Cambodia gay tour

Days 8, and 9 - Siem Reap, Cambodia
In the morning of Day 8, we wake early for sunrise at Angkor Wat, one of the most awe-inspiring archaeological sites in the world.

After exploring Angkor Wat, we continue to Angkor Thom, the last great capital of the Khmer Empire, followed by Bayon Temple with its iconic smiling stone faces.

We also visit Ta Prohm, the jungle-covered temple made famous by the 2001 film Tomb Raider, where massive tree roots wrap around ancient stone walls in a way that makes the whole place feel frozen in time.

In the evening, enjoy a traditional Cambodian dinner accompanied by a classical Apsara dance performance.

Day 9, our final day in Siem Reap has us visiting the beautiful temples of Banteay Srei and Banteay Samre, known for their intricate carvings and pink sandstone.

In the afternoon, we travel to Tonle Sap Lake to explore floating villages and learn about life on the water before ending the day with a sunset cruise across the lake, complete with cocktails and canapés as the sun sets over the water.

Six Senses Krabey Island Resort

Days 10, 11, 12, and 13 - Cambodian Island Resort
This morning begins one of the most unique parts of the trip as we fly to Sihanoukville on the Cambodian coast and transfer by boat to our own luxury private island resort.

With relaxation and reflection in mind, our time here is entirely at leisure. Relax on the beach, enjoy the spa, explore the island, or simply unwind in your private villa.

If you’re feeling adventurous, optional activities are available such as snorkeling, kayaking, and boat excursions to nearby islands and reefs. Think White Lotus, but without the drama, just beautiful beaches, warm water, and a few very relaxing days to end the journey. This is your time to slow down and enjoy the natural beauty of the Cambodian coast.

On the final day of the trip, you return to the mainland and transfer to Phnom Penh Airport, after which point you’ll make your way home.

Grand Pioneers Halong Bay Cruise

Accommodation

This journey features a collection of premium boutique hotels throughout the trip.

Hanoi, Vietnam
Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi Hotel, 5*
Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi Hotel Set in the heart of Hanoi's French Quarter, the Sofitel Legend Metropole is one of Southeast Asia's most iconic historic hotels. Opened in 1901, the hotel blends French colonial elegance with modern luxury, featuring beautifully designed rooms, a peaceful courtyard pool, multiple bars and restaurants, and a spa. Guests over the decades have included Charlie Chaplin and Graham Greene. The location is ideal, just steps from the Opera House and within walking distance of the Old Quarter, making it the perfect base to begin our time in Vietnam.

Halong Bay, Vietnam
Grand Pioneers Cruise, 5* - Ocean Suite
Halong Bay Grand Pioneers CruiseThere is no better way to experience Halong Bay than from the deck of a luxury cruise ship, and the Grand Pioneers is one of the finest on the water. Launched in 2023, it's one of the newest and most sophisticated vessels in the bay. The Ocean Suites are a generous 40 square meters with floor-to-ceiling windows and private balconies that put the limestone karsts front and center from the moment you wake up. On board you'll find a pool, spa, sky bar, elegant dining room, and enough lounge space that it genuinely feels less like a cruise ship and more like a floating boutique hotel. The bay does the rest.

Luang Prabang, Laos
Sofitel Luang Prabang Hotel, 5*
Sofitel Luang Prabang HotelLocated just outside the historic center, Sofitel Luang Prabang is a peaceful resort set within beautifully restored French colonial buildings. The property feels quiet and secluded, with lush gardens, a large pool, spa, and open-air restaurant. Rooms are spacious and designed in a colonial-meets-Laos style, and many feature private gardens or outdoor soaking tubs, making this one of the most relaxing and charming stays of the trip.

Siem Reap, Cambodia
Park Hyatt Siem Reap Hotel, 5*
Park Hyatt Siem Reap HotelOriginally the legendary Hotel de la Paix, the Park Hyatt Siem Reap was redesigned by acclaimed architect Bill Bensley and reopened in 2013. To this day, it remains the gold standard for luxury in the city. Rooms start at a generous 35 square meters and are beautifully appointed with Italian marble bathrooms, Khmer-inspired artwork, wooden floors, and deep soaking tubs. Two pools, a full spa, excellent restaurants, and a Living Room lounge that's a genuine social hub round out the experience. It's right in the heart of Siem Reap, walkable to the markets and nightlife, and a short tuk-tuk ride from Angkor Wat. After long days in the heat exploring the temples, coming back to this place feels like a reward.

Cambodian Coast, Cambodia
Six Senses Krabey Island, 5* (Ocean Pool Villa Suite)
Six Senses Krabey IslandThere are few better ways to end a trip than on a private island, and Six Senses Krabey Island is about as good as it gets. Opened in 2019 on a lush 30-acre island a 15-minute speedboat ride from the Cambodian coast, the resort features 40 standalone villas, each with its own private pool. The Ocean Pool Villa Suites are 111 square meters of floor-to-ceiling glass, private infinity pool, sundeck, deep soaking tub, and sweeping ocean views. Two restaurants serving fresh Khmer cuisine, a world-class spa, an open-air cinema, a sky observatory, and a genuine commitment to sustainability round out the experience.

Trip Notes

Arrival & Departure
Your journey begins at Hanoi's Noi Bai International Airport (HAN), roughly 45 minutes from the city center.

The trip concludes at Phnom Penh International Airport (PNH). From Six Senses Krabey Island, you'll transfer back to the mainland and continue to PNH for departure; your Trip Leader will coordinate timing to make sure you arrive with margin.

Visa requirements are straightforward across the region. Vietnam offers an e-visa available in advance to most nationalities; Laos and Cambodia issue e-visas or visas on arrival. We'll send detailed visa guidance based on your passport before departure. Multiple internal flights connect the legs of the trip - Hanoi to Luang Prabang, Luang Prabang to Siem Reap, Siem Reap to the coast - and the group moves together throughout.

The Climate
Both February and November sit within the dry, cooler windows of mainland Southeast Asia and are among the best months to travel across Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia, with comfortable temperatures, manageable humidity, and reliable sunshine.

February is the tail of the cool, dry season. Hanoi and Halong Bay can be cooler than people expect - daytime temperatures in the high teens to low 70s°F (20s°C), with crisp mornings and the occasional misty cruise day on the bay (atmospheric, not unpleasant). Luang Prabang is mild and dry, Siem Reap is warm, and the Cambodian coast is reliably sunny.

November falls at the end of the rainy season when landscapes are at their lushest and greenest, daytime temperatures run a touch warmer than February, and brief afternoon showers are possible but rare by mid-month. The Mekong runs higher and the rice paddies are still vivid green.

Across both departures, expect warm afternoons, cool mornings (especially on the river and in the north), and the kind of evening light perfect for photos. A light layer is helpful for early starts and air-conditioned interiors.

The People & LGBTQ+ Friendliness
Across Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia, travelers will find a generally respectful and welcoming environment. Same-sex relationships are legal across all three countries, and the hotels and partners on this journey are professional, internationally trained, and entirely accustomed to welcoming LGBTQ+ travelers.

Cultural norms in this region are more reserved than in Western destinations, regardless of orientation. Public displays of affection (any couple, any kind) are simply less common in non-tourist contexts. Discretion in temples, rural villages, and during sacred ceremonies like the Luang Prabang alms-giving is a matter of cultural respect rather than caution.

In tourist hubs, the atmosphere is relaxed and open. Hanoi and Siem Reap all have visible queer-friendly nightlife scenes for travelers who'd like to seek them out. Your Trip Leader is briefed in advance, and every property and partner on this journey has been chosen with our community in mind.

Meals
Daily breakfasts and dinners are included throughout, along with a curated selection of lunches that highlight regional flavors and standout settings - a champagne breakfast cruise on the Mekong, the meal you'll cook yourself in a private Lao cooking class, a traditional Khmer dinner with classical Apsara dance in Siem Reap, and dining at sea on Halong Bay.

Vietnamese, Lao, and Cambodian cuisines are three of the most distinctive in the region - pho, bun cha, and fresh herbs in Vietnam; sticky rice and laap in Laos; fish amok and kuy teav in Cambodia. Six Senses Krabey Island delivers exceptional Khmer cooking sourced largely from its own gardens, and the Sofitel Legend Metropole's restaurants are some of the best fine dining in Hanoi.

You'll also have flexibility to explore on your own. Hanoi's Old Quarter is one of the world's great street-food capitals, and Siem Reap's restaurant scene has come into its own over the past decade. Your Trip Leader will offer recommendations throughout. If you have dietary restrictions or preferences, let us know in advance so we can plan accordingly.

Packing Advice
Pack for warm weather, occasional cool mornings, and a mix of cultural sites, jungle, river, and beach. Lightweight, breathable fabrics work best, along with comfortable walking shoes for old-quarter cobblestones and uneven temple ruins.

Modest attire is required for temples and should cover shoulders and knees. A light scarf or shawl is useful and easy to slip on as needed. Slip-on shoes save time at temple entrances, where shoes must be removed.

Angkor gay tour

Money
You'll encounter three local currencies, Vietnamese Dong (VND), Lao Kip (LAK), and Cambodian Riel (KHR), though in practice, US Dollars are widely accepted across Cambodia (the country effectively runs on USD for tourism) and increasingly at hotels and major sites in Vietnam and Laos. Credit cards are accepted at hotels and most restaurants; Amex coverage is more limited.

Carry small-denomination cash for markets, tuk-tuks, street vendors, and small purchases. Vietnam and Laos use very large denominations (a single US dollar is roughly 25,000 dong or 22,000 kip) which can be disorienting at first but easy to settle into.

Tipping is appreciated but not as embedded in the culture as in some destinations. We'll provide detailed guidance pre-trip; as a general framework and tipping guidance for your Trip Leader will be included in your pre-departure materials.

One cultural note: tipping is not appropriate during the Luang Prabang alms-giving ceremony as the monks accept rice and food offerings only, never money. Your local guide will walk you through the protocol if you choose to participate.

Trip Leaders
Your Trip Leader is with you from beginning to end. Coordinating logistics across three countries, smoothing transitions and making sure the journey holds together as one continuous experience. All of our Trip Leaders come from the Detours team and you'll be in confident, familiar hands.

In each destination, expert local guides take the lead on the experience itself. Historians and cultural specialists in Hanoi and Luang Prabang, Angkorologists at the temples, naturalists on the rivers. Their knowledge transforms what could be a sightseeing checklist into something genuinely substantive.

Your Group
Our journeys are intentionally capped at 16 travelers. Small enough to feel personal, large enough for a vibrant social dynamic. The number is deliberate: it allows the boutique properties on this trip (the cruise, the cooking class, the island villas) to host us with warmth and creates real space for conversation.

Most guests come as solo travelers, couples, or pairs of friends. Ages typically range across 50s to 60s, with a mix that skews toward the curious, well-traveled, and culturally engaged.

Gay Halong Bay

Solo Travelers
Solo travelers are a natural fit on this journey. The shared rhythm of group dinners, the cruise, communal breakfasts, the cooking class, sunset cocktail cruises, creates connection naturally. A small group size means no one stays a stranger.

The trip is built so you can participate fully or take quiet time alone, particularly during the four days on Krabey Island, where private pool villas mean genuine privacy is always available when you want it.

Gay Cambodia tour

Electrical Outlets
Plug types vary across the region but are consistent enough that one universal adapter handles the entire trip. Vietnam primarily uses Types A and C, Laos uses Types A, B, C, E, and F, and Cambodia uses Types A, C, and G.

A universal adapter that supports Type A, Type C, and Type G sockets will be good enough to use for this trip.

Staying Connected
Wi-Fi is reliable at every hotel on this journey and in most cafés and restaurants in cities. The Halong Bay cruise has onboard Wi-Fi, though connectivity slows as the ship sails deeper into the bay. Six Senses Krabey Island has Wi-Fi available, but the design of the experience invites unplugging.

For consistent connectivity across three countries, we recommend an eSIM (Airalo, Holafly, and Nomad all offer affordable Southeast Asia regional plans) or an international roaming plan. Local SIM cards are inexpensive if you prefer, and easy to pick up at airport arrivals.

Cell coverage drops noticeably on the Mekong River, in rural Laos, and on the boat ride to Krabey Island. Your Trip Leader is reachable throughout via WhatsApp and group SMS, and every hotel maintains direct emergency lines.
