Follow migrating whales, snorkel UNESCO-protected reefs, and toast under the stars on our Baja California gay cruise. Jacques Cousteau called the Gulf of California "the Aquarium of the World", and after an expedition aboard the National Geographic Venture, you’ll see exactly why! Set sail from colonial Loreto and enjoy a front-row seat to some of the world’s best whale watching. Kayak, paddleboard, and snorkel among sea lions and dolphins, then go ashore for nature hikes framed by surreal boojum trees and towering cardón cacti.
Follow the gray whales to their Pacific lagoons for unforgettable mother-calf encounters, then head south toward Cabo Pulmo’s thriving reefs. Evenings onboard will be lively, with drag shows and dancing under the stars. This is Mexico’s marine paradise, served with a queer twist!

Baja California is where desert wilderness meets one of the world’s most dynamic seas. Lindblad Expeditions has explored the region since 1981, building a depth of knowledge that helps veteran captains and expedition teams read changing conditions, follow wildlife and shape each day around the best opportunities nature presents
Cruise by panga among gray whales and their calves in Baja California’s sheltered lagoons and explore the Gulf of California, home to around one-third of the world’s cetacean species.

Swim with playful sea lions at Los Islotes and watch pods of dolphins and leaping mobula rays from the ship’s bow. Naturalists, certified photo instructors and undersea specialists reveal Baja California as one interconnected ecosystem, from its cactus-studded shores and seabird colonies to the astonishing life hidden beneath the water’s surface. Wild and otherworldly, Baja California is made for expedition travel—a blissfully remote wilderness remarkably close to home.

A Note on Expedition Cruising
Unlike our typical offerings, an expedition cruise is not only more exciting but also less predictable. The Captain must factor in ever-changing sea, wildlife, and weather conditions in a remote part of the world. Therefore, the itinerary is less specific than usual, and sights visited are subject to change. Still, the days will be full of adventure.

Day 1 ¡Bienvenidos a Mexico! Touch down in Loreto (LTO), the first Spanish colonial settlement on the Baja California Peninsula, which served as the capital of Las Californias until 1777. Mid-afternoon, we’ll gather at the hotel for a meet and greet, then we’ll transfer to the National Geographic Venture, setting sail as the sun goes down over the Gulf of California (a.k.a. The Sea of Cortez). Onboard, we’ll start with a safety briefing before dinner and a lively cocktail mixer (with a DJ) where you can get to know your fellow travellers.

Day 2 We’ll awaken in Bahía Concepción, one of the largest bays on the Baja peninsula, with shores stretching over 50 miles. Enjoy coffee on deck while watching the sunrise paint the landscape, then set out to explore this biodiversity hotspot by Zodiac in search of whales and marine life. We’ll kayak through lush mangrove channels and snorkel in turquoise waters. On land, we’ll have the option to join an invigorating hike among towering cacti or stroll the pristine beaches while our naturalists share insight into the local ecology. Back on board, the evening gets a little spicy with a drag show.

Day 3 Jacques Cousteau famously dubbed the Gulf of California "the aquarium of the world", and today, we’ll explore biodiverse waters, keeping an eye out for whales, dolphins, and other marine life as we cruise past uninhabited islands scattered across the Gulf. Our Captain and Expedition Leader will work together to shape the day’s plans, and depending on conditions, we might hike, kayak, or paddleboard, all while learning about the surrounding ecosystem from our onboard naturalists and picking up photography tips from our certified photo instructor along the way. Get ready to boogie, because tonight we’re throwing it back (and forward) with our ’80s to Now Disco Dance Party!

Day 4 After breakfast, we’ll transfer by motorcoach from Puerto Escondido to one of Baja’s famed gray whale lagoons along the Pacific coast, where our Expedition Leader and local experts will choose the best viewing spot based on current whale activity. Each winter, gray whales migrate south from their Arctic feeding grounds to breed and give birth in these sheltered waters, and we’ll head out in small pangas alongside local fishermen for a chance to see mother-calf pairs up close. We’ll enjoy lunch at a traditional restaurant before returning to the ship in the late afternoon. This evening, we’ll be entertained with another fun drag show.

Day 5 - 7 We’ll venture south toward the gems of the southern Gulf, a region celebrated for its marine conservation and abundant wildlife. Along the way, we may snorkel the pristine reefs of Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park, one of the most successful marine reserves in the world. We might also explore Isla Espíritu Santo, a national park and UNESCO World Heritage Site shaped by volcanic rock formations, scenic beaches, and coral reefs, where we can hike or snorkel in crystal-clear waters often visited by sea turtle researchers.

At Los Islotes, near the northern tip of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, we’ll don our snorkel gear to swim amongst a lively colony of playful sea lions. On Isla San José, one of the Gulf’s larger islands, we can photograph the ochre cliffs of its eastern shore, hike through a cactus-studded arroyo, or visit the remains of an old salt works to the west. Evenings will be lively, with one more DJ night under the stars, one more drag night to bring the sparkle, and a grand finale on our Farewell night!

Day 8 After one last breakfast onboard, we’ll disembark in Loreto and bid farewell to our incredible Expedition Team, with a few group transfers to the airport provided. Thanks for joining our Baja California adventure, and safe travels home!
Please do not book your international flights out of Loreto until you have received the trip confirmation email.

Mexico begs for return visits. Its colourful capital teems with colonial heritage, leafy plazas, world-class museums, and endless evening fiestas. Meanwhile the countryside is peppered with Mayan ruins and ancient architectural marvels. Steaming jungles and desert landscapes collide with the Caribbean Sea and Pacific Ocean. And not to be outshone, Mexico’s world-renowned cuisine is as diverse as the country itself.
Local LGBT Scene Puerto Vallarta has long been deemed one of the world’s premiere gay hot spots. Beyond this rambunctious resort town, robust queer scenes exist in Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey and most tourist destinations. Finally, Mexico City has hosted an annual Pride parade as far back as 1979!
Best Time to Visit Mexico’s shoulder season runs July through August. The high season begins in December and ends in April. Avoid travelling to Mexico in September when heavy rain and high winds are common.

Welcome aboard the National Geographic Venture, the sleek expedition ship that will carry us from colonial Loreto to whale lagoons, sea lion colonies, and UNESCO-protected reefs on our Baja California: Gay Cruise & Expedition.

We’ve chartered the entire ship; all 50 cabins, for our guests. She normally carries up to 100 guests, but we’re capping our sailing at 85 so there’s even more elbow room on deck when the whales show up. With over 40 staff and crew on board, that’s nearly one crew member for every two guests.

Curious how the Captain decides where to go next? Thanks to an open bridge policy, you’re welcome to pop up at (almost) any hour to learn a little navigation and grab a pair of provided binoculars to scan for whales and dolphins alongside the on-duty spotters. Forward standing areas on the Bridge and tiered observation decks mean nobody’s stuck craning over someone’s shoulder. It’s the closest you’ll get to driving the boat, and honestly, we’d leave the steering to the pros.

Twice the Adventure, Every Day!
On most days, we’ll head out on two separate excursions, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. This means Zodiac rides in search of dolphins, kayaking through mangrove channels, paddleboarding in turquoise coves, snorkeling with sea turtles and sea lions, and guided hikes among surreal boojum trees and towering cardón cacti. Compared to most LGBTQ+ cruises, that’s double the adventure. The Captain and Expedition Leader shape each day around the weather and wildlife, which means the itinerary stays flexible and the surprises keep coming.

Public Spaces
The Lounge is the beating heart of the ship. Wraparound windows keep you connected to the scenery, and it’s where we’ll gather each evening for cocktail hour and the daily Recap, when the naturalists share photos and stories from the day’s adventures. It’s also where a talented queen will teach the dolphins a thing or two about making a splash. And doors lead straight out to the open bow, in case those dolphins decide to give our queen a run for her money.

Right next door, the bar pours a cocktail (or mocktail) of the day, often infused with regional flavors, plus locally brewed beers. Tucked into a corner of the Lounge, the cozy library has a photo kiosk where you can start editing your whale shots while the memories are fresh.

Up top, the expansive Sun Deck features an al fresco bar, comfy couches, and lounge chairs. It’s the spot for sunset wine, keeping watch for leaping mobula rays with a naturalist, and, weather permitting, a barbecue dinner or dance party under the stars. There’s also a 24-hour beverage station for coffee, tea, and cocoa at any hour.
The viewing platform at the ship’s bow is the prime spot for whale-and-dolphin watching. Just don’t get too carried away re-enacting that famous moment from Titanic or you might miss the pod of orcas keeping pace with us.

Dining
Meals are served in a single seating with no assigned tables and a come-as-you-are dress code, which is exactly how we like it: mix, mingle, and swap stories with a new crew every night. Oversized windows in the dining room ensure the scenery also has a seat at the table. Dishes are built around locally sourced ingredients and flavors inspired by the region, from fresh-caught fish to breakfast parfaits topped with local fruit. The best part? Standard beer, wine, cocktails, and spirits are included, so go ahead and say yes to that second glass.

Cuisine
Every bite aboard National Geographic Venture is responsibly sourced, and you’ll often spot local and organic options on the menu too. Chefs get playful with unexpected pairings alongside beautifully done takes on the classics you already love. While we can’t tell you exactly what the menu will be, we can show you past dishes that have hit the spot!
