Gay Buenos Aires

Patagonia Gay Expedition Cruise Itinerary

Day 1 - Buenos Aires, Argentina
¡Bienvenidos a Argentina! Touch down in Buenos Aires, a city where European design meets Latin passion. Known for its grand boulevards, café culture, and sultry tango rhythms, this energetic capital sets the tone for the adventure ahead. Wander leafy plazas, sip Malbec at a corner bar, or dive into the city’s dynamic culinary scene.

This evening, we’ll get acquainted with a Group Meeting at 6:00 PM, followed by an included Welcome Dinner.

PLEASE NOTE: For those looking to properly explore this vibrant capital city, we will be offering a pre-cruise extension. More details will be available later.

Accommodation: Sofitel Buenos Aires Recoleta Hotel (or similar), Buenos Aires

Ushuaia Patagonia gay cruise

Day 2 - From Buenos Aires to Ushuaia and Embarkation Day
After an early breakfast, we’ll head to the airport for our private charter flight to Ushuaia, the southernmost city on Earth. Nestled between snow-capped peaks and the Beagle Channel, this remote outpost is your gateway to Patagonia’s wild frontier.

Enjoy some free time to explore its charming streets before boarding the cutting-edge Ultramarine.

This afternoon, we set sail through the historic Beagle Channel, tracing the edge of Tierra del Fuego.

PLEASE NOTE: Unlike our typical offerings, an expedition cruise is not only more exciting, but also less predictable. The Captain must factor in ever-changing sea, wildlife, and weather conditions in a remote part of the world. Therefore, the itinerary is less specific than usual, and sights visited are subject to change. Still, the days will be full of adventure.

Accommodation: Quark Expeditions Ultramarine

Patagonia gay cruise Cape Horn

Day 3 - Cape Horn
Today, we venture toward one of the most sought-after landmarks in maritime history: Cape Horn. Known as the “end of the world,” this windswept headland marks the meeting point of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

Weather permitting, we’ll go ashore to hike to the lighthouse and the Stella Maris Chapel, standing in quiet tribute to the sailors who once braved these treacherous waters. With endless ocean views and the roar of the wind, this is Patagonia at its most raw and powerful.

Accommodation: Quark Expeditions Ultramarine

Patagonia gay cruise - Darwin Mountains

Days 4 - 5 - Glacier Alley & Beagle Channel
Prepare for incredible scenery as we cruise the legendary Glacier Alley, where colossal rivers of ice tumble from the Darwin Mountains into the sea. Named in honor of the European countries that explored the region, glaciers like Francia, Italia, and Holanda gleam in shades of blue and white.

We’ll explore by Zodiac and (conditions permitting) hike to scenic viewpoints near Pia Glacier. Keep watch for soaring Andean condors and playful seals as we retrace the route of Charles Darwin through this pristine, otherworldly landscape.

Accommodation: Quark Expeditions Ultramarine

Patagonia gay cruise - Dainelli Glacier

Day 6 - Dainelli (Aguila) Glacier
Tucked within a tranquil lagoon in Agostini Sound, Dainelli Glacier offers a striking change of scenery. Flowing over rolling hills rather than jagged peaks, it’s a rare and mesmerizing sight.

We’ll aim to go ashore for a gentle hike along the shoreline, taking in sweeping views of glaciers, forests, and mountains in one serene panorama.

Accommodation: Quark Expeditions Ultramarine

Chilean Fjords gay cruise

Day 7 - Chilean Fjords
Today, we glide through a remote maze of fjords and channels, where snow-dusted peaks rise dramatically from the sea.

As we sail deeper into Chilean Patagonia, our Expedition Team will bring the landscape to life with stories of glaciology, wildlife, and early exploration.

Up on deck, keep an eye out for seabirds, dolphins, and even whales breaching nearby. It’s a day to reflect, recharge, and relax amidst the raw beauty that surrounds us.

Accommodation: Quark Expeditions Ultramarine

Patagonia gay cruise - Torres del Paine

Days 8 - 9 - Puerto Natales & Torres del Paine
Arriving in Puerto Natales, we step ashore for an unforgettable journey into Torres del Paine National Park. Towering granite spires, turquoise lakes, and sweeping pampas define this UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

Choose from a range of guided excursions tailored to your activity level, from scenic lookouts to invigorating hikes.

We’ll also visit a traditional Patagonian estancia, where you’ll gain insight into local ranching culture and, with luck, spot guanacos and rheas roaming the grasslands. A sampling of barbecued lamb al palo (on a stick) rounds out this experience before returning to the ship.

Accommodation: Quark Expeditions Ultramarine

Patagonia glaciers gay cruise

Day 10 - Canal de las Montañas
As we sail the "Channel of the Mountains", we’ll be surrounded by towering peaks, cascading waterfalls, and glaciers that spill dramatically into the sea. This narrow passage is a visual masterpiece, with shimmering ice fields and steep cliffs at every turn.

Weather permitting, we’ll explore by Zodiac or even kayak for a closer, more intimate encounter with this breathtaking landscape.

Accommodation: Quark Expeditions Ultramarine

Patagonia gay cruise - Magellanic penguins

Day 11 - Tucker Islets
Wildlife takes center stage today at Tucker Islets, home to a lively colony of Magellanic penguins.

While we won’t land (to protect their habitat), our Zodiac cruise brings us close enough to watch these charismatic creatures waddle, dive, and play. Keep your binoculars handy: this area is also rich in birdlife, and if we’re lucky, dolphins may make an appearance alongside the boat.

Accommodation: Quark Expeditions Ultramarine

Patagonia wildlife gay cruise

Day 12 - Ainsworth Bay
Set within the protected wilderness of Alberto de Agostini National Park, Ainsworth Bay is a haven of sub-Antarctic forest and spectacular beauty.

We’ll head ashore for hikes suited to all levels, with rewarding views of Marinelli Glacier and the surrounding fjord. Birdlife is abundant here, making it a paradise for nature lovers and photographers alike.

Accommodation: Quark Expeditions Ultramarine

Patagonia gay cruise - Brookes Glacier

Day 13 - Brookes Bay
Today’s destination is a true hidden gem, as we enter a glacial amphitheater where waterfalls cascade and icebergs drift in silence.

Step ashore for close-up views of North Brookes Glacier, and listen for the thunderous crack of calving ice, a powerful reminder of nature’s force in this remote corner of the world.

Accommodation: Quark Expeditions Ultramarine

Patagonia whale

Day 14 - Strait of Magellan & San Isidro
As we re-enter the historic Strait of Magellan, we visit the remote San Isidro region.

Here, a timeworn lighthouse and small museum offer insight into the lives of early explorers and seafarers who once navigated these waters. Surrounded by rugged coastline and sweeping views, it’s a fitting final chapter to this epic journey.

Accommodation: Quark Expeditions Ultramarine

Gay Santiago Chile

Day 15 - Punta Arenas / Santiago, Chile / Departure
After one last breakfast onboard, we’ll disembark in Punta Arenas and bid farewell to our amazing Expedition Team.

An included flight whisks us to Arturo Merino Benitez International Airport in Santiago, where our journey concludes.

Thanks for joining our Patagonia adventure, and safe travels home!

Please do not book your international flights out of Santiago until you have received the trip confirmation email.

Argentina Gay Travel

Trip Notes

Buenos Aires alone makes Argentina a must-visit destination for gay travellers. Never mind picture-perfect Patagonia or striking Iguazú Falls.
Evita’s homeland is the world’s largest Spanish-speaking nation. At 2,780,400 km2 (1,073,500 mi2), it’s also the second-largest country in South America. Given this size, Argentina covers an array of climate zones. It even claims some South Atlantic islands and part of Antarctica as its own. The nation is home to notable wine regions like Mendoza and La Rioja, along with the vivacious city of Buenos Aires. Argentine Patagonia, where we visit on our Argentina Gay Tours, is famous for arid steppes, grasslands and deserts, while Chilean Patagonia – on the other side of the Andes Mountains – is known for glacial fjords and temperate rainforest.

Culture Shock
Argentina is a well-developed nation with many of the luxuries of home. While many Portenos (residents of Buenos Aires) speak English, the vast majority of Argentines in the rural regions we visit only speak Spanish. This can make communication tricky from time to time. Other than potential miscommunications, pickpockets are prevalent so we recommend leaving jewellery and valuables in your hotel room safe.

Chile is one of South America’s most highly developed nations, with a thriving GDP, but it also has a major chasm between rich and poor. Most economic and industrial development has occurred in the last thirty years, so their newfound prosperity is beginning to have an impact.

Argentina Visa
A visa is not typically required for American, Australian, British and Canadian citizens travelling to Argentina for up to 90 days. There may be exceptions, and all visas are the responsibility of the traveller.

Chile Visa
Canadians, Americans, and most Europeans don’t need a visa. There may be exceptions, and all visas are the traveller’s responsibility.

Chile Gay Travel

Local LGBT Scene
Argentina is, by most accounts, a very LGBTQ-welcoming destination with an extremely lively gay scene in Buenos Aires. While a small minority of Argentines hold onto socially conservative views, homophobia is on the decline.

In Chile, LGBTQ+ rights are progressing. Same-sex couples have had legal protection since 2015, but still cannot marry. They can also apply to adopt, but only one partner becomes a legal parent. There are no service bans for the military, and transgender people can change their sex and name. Community and nightlife thrive in the capital of Santiago, especially in Barrio Bellavista. To make the most of it, bear in mind that things don’t get rolling until late in the night (the Latin way).

Weather
March is autumn in Patagonia, offering a beautiful and quieter time to explore the region. Daytime temperatures range from 50°F to 68° F (10°C – 20°C) and can drop quickly in the evenings, bringing a noticeable chill. Nighttime temperatures can range from 37°F to 50°F (3°C to 10°C). Weather patterns across Patagonia remain highly unpredictable, and it’s not unusual to encounter strong winds, sudden rain, or even occasional snow flurries. Be sure to pack layers and prepare for rapidly changing conditions.

Electricity
The electrical supply on board the Ultramarine is 220 volts, 50 Hz. Passengers coming from the USA and Canada may need to bring a small 220v/110v converter. Before you purchase a converter, check your electronics, as most modern cameras, computers, smartphones, and devices are already compatible with 220/110 volts.

The electrical outlets in your cabin and around the ship accept standard European two-round pin plugs, so you may need to bring a travel adaptor. You’ll also find a USB outlet at each bedside and some in the public presentation spaces.

Connectivity:
Our hotel offers Wi-Fi. During the cruise, basic Wi-Fi is included, suitable only for email or texting apps. You can purchase ship-to-shore satellite communications and Wi-fi access on board. Pricing will be provided with your final trip documents. Connectivity while on the ship can be very sporadic.

Quark Expeditions Ultramarine

Your Home at Sea - Ultramarine

The newest ship in our fleet, Ultramarine, is designed to go beyond the familiar in polar exploration, to discover new places, and to immerse you in the best the region has to offer.

Equipped with two twin-engine helicopters, Ultramarine offers the most robust portfolio of adventure activities in the industry, the most spacious suites in its category, breathtaking public spaces, and more outdoor wildlife viewing spaces than other expedition ships its size. It also features an innovative mix of sustainability features that exceed all industry standards.

With all this and more, Ultramarine is set to deliver the ultimate polar expedition experience.

Ultramarine ship helicopter

Ultramarine, the newest, ice-strengthened polar tour ship designed specifically for navigating the Arctic and Antarctic, with a priority on maximising guest experience in this part of the world.

The MV Ultramarine can hold a maximum of 199 passengers (200 people is the maximum number that can leave any ship at the same time in the Antarctic according to IAATO regulations) and 140 crew, so not only does it pass this important passenger limit rule, there’s substantial staff available to cover all needs and requirements for high-end cruise executions.

Ultramarine spa

With a focus on environmentally responsible tourism, Quark ensured that the Ultramarine also utilises the most sustainable tech available to operate, including special systems to convert waste to energy, minimise fuel consumption and navigate narrow passages without impacting the land or seabed.

Luxury is paramount onboard, and every corner blends spacious functionality with high-end amenities and tasteful decorations.

Ultramarine bar

There are 8 decks with different style cabins, lounge, two bars, two restaurants, presentation room, gym, spa, reception, ready room and a fully-stocked store.

The newest addition and arguable highlight is the two twin engine helicopters that allow for off ship experiences such as scenic flights and landings in places few people have ever seen.

Ultramarine Panorama Lounge

Located at the bow on Deck 7 is the Panorama Lounge, the ultimate social hub on the Ultramarine. It’s perfect place for guests to relax and unwind at the end if a big day’s exploration or to chill in the morning with a cup of coffee while watching the landscapes pass by.

Ultramarine restaurant

The main restaurant on the ship is the Balena Restaurant located on Deck 5, there’s two sections to the Balena Restaurant – the front section which is more like a lounge and the bright, back section which has more of a diner feel.

Ultramarine Greenland gay cruise

Patagonia gay cruise heli landing

4 Optional Excursions

Heli Landing
$995 USD per person

Your cruise already includes a short 10-15 flightseeing experience. However, those who want some extra adventure in the sky have a fantastic option!

With a small group of fellow passengers and expert guides, you’ll board one of Ultramarine’s two twin-engine helicopters to soar off to an exclusive site where no ships can navigate. Expect stunning bird’s-eye views during your flight, and then, upon arrival, simply sit back, relax, and take in the splendor of Patagonia from “the best seat in the house”: glacial amphitheaters, breathtaking summits, and tons more.

Traveling in groups of 12 with no more than 4 groups (48 guests) at a time, you’ll have time to relax and quietly reflect on the beauty of your remote surroundings, after which you’ll be picked up by the helicopters in the same location and returned to Ultramarine. Each heli-landing experience is uniquely curated by the expedition team, taking conditions, regulations, and location capacity into consideration.

Patagonia sea kayaking

Paddling
$395 USD per person

If you’d like to try something a bit more entry-level than Sea Kayaking, you’re the perfect candidate to sign up for a one-time paddle on our stable sit-on-top kayaks—perfect for anyone with minimal or no kayaking experience. Small groups of passengers will be taken out on a calm day with expert guides always present to provide instruction and help you connect with the polar sea.

Patagonia Stand Up Paddle Board

Stand Up Paddle Board
$295 USD per person

Combining a surfboard with a kayak, stand-up paddleboarding will give you a very personal and unique perspective on Patagonia. The excursion is conducted in calm bays and harbors, in good weather conditions—and accompanied by a safety Zodiac.

Sea Kayaking Patagonia

Sea Kayaking
$1,995 USD per person

The Sea Kayaking program is a great way to explore your surroundings intimately. A small group of kayakers will plan to go out multiple times per voyage as an alternative to shore landings or Zodiac cruises. The number of opportunities to kayak is weather-dependent and will be conducted only during calm conditions. Prior kayaking experience is required, and you must be able to do a wet exit to participate. Beginners interested in kayaking should consider participating in the Paddling Excursion.
