Hanoi & Ha Long Bay Gay Cruise & Tour Itinerary

Day 1 - Ha Long Bay, Vietnam
Chào ban – welcome to Vietnam!

Things kick off with a morning flight from Ho Chi Minh City to Cat Bi, followed by a 1.5-hour drive to Ha Long Bay where our ship – the Au Co – awaits.

Sip something tropical during our safety briefing, then lunch is served.

Our first stop is Trinh Nu Cave, a majestic grotto carved by nature. Here we can relax on the secluded beach, or take in the stunning views while kayaking in the jade-colored water.

Back on the main vessel we can soak up the sun, settle into a massage, or enjoy happy hour at the bar. Later, join in on the excitement of Masterchef “Halong Bay Edition” and try your hand at creating authentic Vietnamese dishes. We’ll moor by Lom Bo Island overnight.

Please note: Today’s flight is not included in the cost of the tour. Please see Important Information for a special note on purchasing domestic airfare.

Accommodation: The Au Co Cruises The Au Co

Ha Long Bay kayaking

Day 2 - Ha Long Bay / Lan Ha Bay
Wake up to a Tai Chi lesson or sleep in until breakfast when we’ll sail to Cua Van, a floating village set amidst towering islands.

We’ll board kayaks and bamboo boats to journey amongst the fishing families and their homes.

Later, we can walk, bike, or take a trolley to Viet Hai village, known for its stunning surroundings, before savouring a traditional village-style lunch prepared by locals.

We’ll even have an opportunity to take a dip in an emerald lagoon with crystal-clear waters.

At 5pm happy hour begins anew with traditional cooking and fruit-carving demos on the sun deck and a delicious seafood BBQ.

Day 3 - Ha Long Bay / Hanoi
Start your day with more Tai Chi before we visit the wondrous and massive Sung Sot Cave.

We’ll then enjoy brunch, check out, and disembark the ship for our transfer to Hanoi.

On arrival we’ll check in to our luxurious French Quarter hotel, with a but of time to unwind before we’re treated to a unique Hanoian folk music performance by artist Hat Xam. Later, we’ll savour an included dinner at an upscale restaurant.

Day 4 - Hanoi
After breakfast, we’ll begin our city tour at the Museum of Ethnology where the highlight is a beautiful outdoor area featuring genuine houses and compounds built and used by many different ethnic groups.

Continuing on, we’ll visit the Temple of Literature, Vietnam’s first university, before enjoying lunch at a restaurant owned by an NGO that trains disadvantaged youth in the hospitality industry.

Then it’s on to Ba Dinh Square, a.k.a the Ho Chi Minh complex, where the revolutionary leader declared Vietnam’s independence in 1945. We’ll visit the Stilt House – where he lived – along with the Presidential Palace which he shunned given its colonial credentials.

We’ll also visit the nearby One Pillar Pagoda before wandering through the chaotic old quarter for a quintessential Hanoian experience.

This evening, we’ll gather for dinner at a Michelin-rated restaurant featuring contemporary Vietnamese food.

Trip Notes

Culture Shock
When visiting Vietnam, you’ll see both good and bad. Poverty is widespread, but the friendly locals make up for it. Since English speakers can be hard to find, arm yourself with a phrase book and a sense of humour!

Vietnam Visa
If you arrive directly via our riverboat cruise, your visa will need to be arranged in advance through your local Vietnamese embassy or consulate and you do not qualify for an e-visa or visa on arrival. If you arrive by airport or another major airport, you can get your visa on arrival. All visas are the traveller’s responsibility.

Local LGBT Scene
Vietnam isn’t a gay hotspot, but there’s an impressive amount of nightlife in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi. From hole-in-the-wall drag bars, to cafes, to some of the best lady-boy cabarets we’ve seen, you certainly won’t be at a loss for things to do.

Gay Vietnam Travel
As a traveller (straight or gay), it’s best to avoid public displays of affection, but in turn you shouldn’t expect any issues regarding sexuality. Head to Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh for the country’s largest gay scenes, including some spectacular Cabarets and Drag Shows. There are no gay districts in Vietnam. Bars and clubs are peppered throughout.

Weather
You can expect excellent weather throughout Cambodia and Vietnam in March. Days are typically dry and sunny with little or no rainfall, and temperatures average around 30°C/85°F.

Electricity
You will need an international travel plug/adapter for type A/C/G sockets.

Connectivity:
Our hotel has Wi-Fi access, however our boat in Ha Long Bay will only have Wi-Fi in the restaurant area. If you require connectivity, we recommend purchasing an international data plan or local SIM card (with an unlocked device). Even with a SIM card or roaming plan, coverage may be weak.

The Au Co Cruise

The Au Co Cruises The Au Co, Ha Long Bay
One of the prettiest ships in Halong, the steel-hulled Au Co offers smooth sailing through Halong and Lan Ha bays. Retrace the steps of colonial-era explorers in vintage style aboard this 32-cabin ship, visiting hidden beaches, forested islands, and gorgeous sea lakes.

Au Co stateroom

In early 2020, the Au Co ship received a comprehensive renovation, lending a beautiful contemporary feel to the ancient Vietnamese legend on which the ships are inspired. Returning guests will enjoy the same sophisticated ambiance aboard the Au Co with several delightful upgrades. Updated cabins feature a modern Asian flair, subtly incorporating design elements telling the love story of Princess Au Co and her Dragon Lord of the Sea.

Au Co dining room

Travel further where few ships go on our 3D/2N itinerary, taking in the natural beauty of both Halong and Lan Ha Bays. Swim in secluded waters, cycle to a remote village on Cat Ba Island, and experience a floating village in the quiet early morning hours. On board, cooking competitions, a traditional tea ceremony, and our legendary BBQ evening under the stars await.

Au Co BBQ

Dining aboard the Au Co promises to be one of the highlights of your cruise, offering a fine restaurant-quality experience in one of the most scenic places on Earth. Our signature dishes fuse the best of Vietnamese and Western flavors and cooking techniques for a delightfully unexpected culinary journey featuring locally caught seafood, imported meats, and seasonally fresh produce. Expect only the finest from our talented team of chefs, whether at a beautiful breakfast buffet spread, an elegant multi-course lunch or dinner, or one of our famous BBQ nights under the stars.
