Venice, Italy Saturday, October 6, 2018
Arrive on Saturday, October 6 and take advantage of our “floating hotel”. We don’t depart until 12 PM on Sunday, October 7 so you’ll be able to maximize your time in this beautiful city. Consisting of more than 100 islands, Venice is Europe’s largest urban car-free area. The only means for getting around (on dry land, at least) are your own two feet— unless, of course, you travel by water taxi or gondola. And let’s face it: If you don’t go on a gondola ride when you’re in Venice, you’ll never hear the end of it back home! Fortunately, your walking time will be cut considerably because our ship will dock at the San Basilio Cruise Terminal, a mere 25-minute meander away from Venice’s city center. You’ll have ample time to people-watch in the Piazza San Marco, sample Veneto wines, and shop for everything from Murano glass to swathes of silk, and even take that dreamy sunset gondola ride.
Venice, Italy Sunday, October 7, 2018
It’s hard to not get swept up in the romance and beauty of Venice – “The City of Water”. Let yourself be taken in by the city’s many charms as you stroll along the cobblestone streets, overarching bridges, and world-famous canals. And then plan on doing a little more walking to get that last coffee or souvenir before boarding the ship to cross the Adriatic.
Dubrovnik, Croatia Monday, October 8, 2018
In this UNESCO World Heritage Site, massive stone walls protect winding streets, charming squares, and red-roofed buildings dating back to the 7th century. Even the walls themselves are spectacular and a “must walk” along the top. Shoes, leather, and traditional Konavle embroidery are found in the pedestrian-only Old Town stalls—and with a goldsmith trade that goes back to the 13th century, the quality and price of gold, coral, and filigree silver jewelry is outstanding here, too. Check out the Franciscan Monastery Museum, home to one of Europe’s oldest pharmacies where many of the lotions and potions are still made from ancient recipes. Take the cable car up to the top of Mount Srd, then relax at the end of the day with a glass of rakija. (If you’re a Game of Thrones fan, you may experience déjà vu, since Dubrovnik stands in for King’s Landing, capital of the Seven Kingdoms in the popular TV series.)
A Day at Sea! Tuesday, October 9, 2018
It’s time to relax, sip a glass of wine or sparkling water and catch up with friends. Get a massage at the spa, sunbathe at the pool, or just sit and enjoy gorgeous views of the Ionian Sea.
Chania, Crete, Greece Wednesday, October 10, 2018
Chania, the second largest city on the island of Crete, is a modern city built over the ruins of the ancient city of Kydonia. Stroll through the old city and you’ll see how it has been touched by the intersection of diverse civilizations throughout history, with a mixture of Greek, Venetian and Ottoman influences on every corner through Minoan ruins, Byzantine churches and impressive frescos. If you like archaeology, The Archaeological Museum houses an extensive collection of Minoan and Roman artifacts. The Naval Museum is also great way to explore the ages of Chania, with replicas of ships dating back to the Bronze Age. Discover the Byzantine collection in the restored Venetian Church of San Salvadore, or go into nature at the nearby national park and hike the Samaria Gorge. And if you just want to take it easy, relax at a seaside café and enjoy a glass of Cretan wine and some baklava.
Santorini, Greece Thursday, October 11, 2018
Known as Thira in Greek, Santorini is a volcanic island in the Cyclades of the Aegean Sea. It is famous for dramatic views, stunning sunsets from Oia, the white aubergine (eggplant), its black, red and white sand beaches and its very own active volcano. The capital, Fira, a pedestrian haven with narrow, meandering cobblestone lanes, is reachable only by cable car, donkey, or for the fit and fearless, a flight of 600 steps. Browse the shops and enjoy a lazy lunch with a view, or explore other areas of this beautiful island by visiting the Village of Oia, Pyrgos Village, Boutari Winery or Perivolos Beach.
Mykonos, Greece Friday, October 12, 2018
Windswept Mykonos, known as the gay & lesbian hotspot in Greece, is just over 40 square miles of rugged terrain dotted with granite stone, windmills and blinding white-washed buildings -- all bordered by beach and backlit by blue skies. It's also one of the most visited of the Greek islands. You will find tavernas for al fresco dining, ouzo drinking and people watching, and sandy beaches. Nearby island, Ancient Delos, is an archeological marvel accessible by 20-minute boat ride and you’ll see luxury yachts bobbing on the light blue Aegean Sea. Take a stroll through Mykonos Town, filled with cobblestone alleys winding through cube-shaped restaurants, residences and boutiques, or visit one of the gay beaches – Paradise, Super Paradise or Elia.
Athens (Piraeus), Greece Saturday, October 13, 2018
We end our journey in the iconic city of Athens, one of the foremost examples of ancient Greek architecture and culture. Home of the first Olympics in 776 B.C., as well as the first modern Olympics in 1896, Athens has over 5,000 years of history and ethos. Temples to Greek Gods, looming structures that still stand today and plazas with hundreds of shops, Athens is a city that will keep you interested long after you’re gone. Be sure to visit The Acropolis, the ancient “high city” of Athens, crowned by marble temples sacred to the city’s goddess Athena. The Parthenon, the Erectheion and the Temple of Nike are the three most important buildings that hold their structure today. And if you love to shop, The Plaka, Monastiraki and Thissio are charming historic districts at the foot of the Acropolis, with restored 19th century neoclassical homes, pedestrianized streets, shops and restaurants.
